Be the Salt

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”

Matthew 15:13

Consider the people you impact. Make a list.

Think about your family and friends, those you are around at work, those you are with at church, and those you are around in your community. How many of those people have been influenced by your company? Your potential for impact is even greater than you realize.

In the Bible, Jesus taught that we are to be the salt of the Earth. Salt influences every food it touches. It is a potent spice. When salt has been applied, it is immediately evident. The flavor has changed. You could say the food itself is different once salt has seasoned it. In the same way, we are to influence those around us. Their lives should be impacted by coming in contact with us. Their lives should be flavored by encountering our Christ-like example.

The way you choose to live impacts more people than you truly understand. People are watching. People are listening. You are influencing more lives than you imagine through your example and through your words. Make sure you are seasoned with godliness. Make sure the impact you are making is to guide others toward Christ and not away from Him.

As you live your daily life, the mundane cycle of what is familiar, make it a goal to look at every person as a soul needing Christ. It is easy to go through the motions and become numb to the opportunities around us to point someone in the direction of Jesus Christ. He has sprinkled His disciples all over this Earth to flavor it with His influence. Be the salt He has called you to be. Remember that you may be the only opportunity that someone has to experience the love of God. Perhaps God has placed you exactly in the place you are in just to influence the people around you.

Think about it.

If you could look at yourself from the outside, what would you see? Is it evident to others that you are a Christian or does your carnal nature shine through? What would others say about your character and your influence? Think carefully about the kind of witness you have been to those around you. It may be time to a change.

Read about it.

Read about what we are to do in order to be the salt of the Earth in Matthew 5:16, Colossians 4:6, 1 Peter 3:2, and 2 Corinthians 5:18- 6:1. Read Acts 1:8 to understand what you need to be a witness.

Pray about it.

Dear Lord, you called me to draw others to you. I have failed at that task many times. Please forgive me. Help me to see every person as a precious soul that needs to know about you. Let me reflect your light to all those I am around. In Jesus name.
